Understand spend
Reports
CostReveal's figures as CSV or a confidential PDF, generated once or on a schedule, and archived.
Reports take CostReveal's figures to people who do not open it. Find them under Reports in the sidebar.
Generate a report
- Choose the period: the last 7, 30 or 90 days; this or last month, quarter or year; or a range of months you choose.
- Choose the project, or all projects if you can see every project.
- Choose what to report on: Overview, an Explore view, Business, Kubernetes, or Coverage and reconciliation.
- Choose the format:
- CSV, report: the tables of what you report on, one block per month.
- Confidential PDF: the same tables, marked confidential on every page, with what they cover and when they were generated.
- CSV, daily summary: each day's spend by provider and service, with how much is explained and unknown.
- CSV, billing lines: every current billing line, with the owners attribution named for it on each dimension. Shares divided by usage data, Kubernetes clusters and split rules are not per line, so they are in the other formats only.
Report tables are made a month at a time, so the last 7, 30 or 90 days offer the daily summary and billing lines only. An Overview or Explore report adds, for each month after one with spend, What changed from the month before: the change in all spend, and by each dimension the values that moved it most and the rest together, within an Explore report's filters, as Explore's What drove the change shows it.
In Explore, Report opens this form with the view you are looking at.
A report is generated as you, with what you can see. It appears in Archive when it is ready.
Schedule a report
Under Scheduled, choose Schedule a report. A report can run:
- weekly, each Monday, for the week before;
- monthly, on the 3rd, for the month before, once providers have delivered most of it.
Reports run at 06:00 UTC. A scheduled report runs as the person who saved it, with what they can see when it runs, so it never shows more than they could. It stops if they leave the organization or lose access, and says why. Saving it again starts it as you.
Recipients are members of your organization. Each gets an email with a link, never the file, and opening it needs their own sign in. A report of all projects is sent only to people who see every project.
The archive
Archive lists the reports you generated, those sent to you and, for owners and admins, every report of the organization. Each file is written once, and each download is recorded in the audit log.
