Act on spend

Chargeback

Charge spend to cost centers by the owners they name, and close each month into a statement that never changes.

Chargeback bills internal cost centers for the spend they own, as finance runs it each month. Find it under Chargeback in the sidebar.

Cost centers

A cost center has a name, an optional code as your finance system knows it, and the owners it is charged for. Choose New cost center, then pick its owners from those with spend, or add one by name.

  • A project charges back on one owner dimension, team by default, so no dollar is charged twice. You can change it while the project has no cost centers.
  • An owner belongs to one cost center at most.
  • A cost center's figure is what Explore attributes to its owners, on every basis, including what allocation rules, Kubernetes clusters and usage data divide.
  • Spend of owners no cost center names is shown as not assigned, owner by owner, so you can add them. Spend no owner explains is shown apart, and is never spread across cost centers.

Close a month

Choose Close for the month. CostReveal records each cost center's figure, by basis, with what was not assigned and not explained, who closed it and when. A closed statement never changes.

A provider can still restate a month after you close it. The month then shows how far its live figures differ from the statement. Close again records a new version; every version is kept under Statements.

Each statement downloads as CSV for your finance system, or as a confidential PDF. Closing, cost center changes and downloads are in the audit log.

Who can do what

Everyone who sees a project's costs sees its chargeback. Owners, admins and billing members manage cost centers and close months.
