Introduction

What CostReveal does, the providers it reads, and how every figure is explained and checked.

CostReveal attributes AI, cloud and API costs to the teams, features and customers behind them. It reads billing and usage data from your providers, never changes anything in them, and shows every figure with the evidence behind it. Spend that cannot be explained yet is shown as Unknown, never spread across teams to look complete.

What it reads

Fifteen providers, your Kubernetes clusters and any other vendor's bill, each read the way its source offers, and each with its own setup guide:

Your application can also send usage data, so shared AI spend is divided by the customer, feature or user behind each call.

How spend is explained

Every attributed figure carries one of four labels, from the strongest evidence to none:

  • Direct: the provider states it, such as the service or, for AI providers, the model.
  • Inferred: a signal you already have names the owner: a tag or label, a workspace or project owner you named, or a rule that assigns one.
  • Allocated: a shared cost divided by something you can inspect: a split rule, what each Kubernetes workload used, or your usage data.
  • Unknown: nothing names the owner yet. Home shows the one change that would explain the most of it.

Whether an amount is final is a separate question. Spend no invoice confirms yet, such as the open month of a provider's estimates, is marked not yet invoiced on Home, and keeps its owner's label.

How figures are checked

Every billing line is recorded in an append only ledger: a correction from the provider is a new line that keeps what was said before. Attribution on every dimension must add up exactly to that ledger. For AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Oracle Cloud, Anthropic, OpenAI and Datadog, each month is also compared with a second total from the provider itself, and any difference is shown as a variance, never adjusted away. Home shows each month's checks.

What you do with it

  • Home shows what the month cost, how much of it is explained, what changed, the next best action, and whether it ties out.
  • Explore spend by any dimension, then by a second, with the basis of every figure.
  • Business sets cost beside the calls, customers and users it served, and beside revenue.
  • Insights forecasts the month and flags days that spent outside their normal range.
  • Budgets and alerts warn the people you choose by email and Slack, and never block anything.
  • Allocation rules name owners where tags say nothing, and split shared costs in the open.
  • Chargeback closes each month into statements per cost center, and Reports send figures to people who never open CostReveal.
